Most interestingly, it is widely believed by many SL entertainment operators that… This is SL... And therefore, the most basic fundamentals of social entertainment science is not applicable here. LOLOLOLOL. I honestly fall of my chair every time I hear this one.

The mindset suggests that:

  • Some people should STOP smoking weed. It slows neural performance, while affecting higher level reasoning.

  • It further suggests that… That the SL demographic originates from a different planet, and that the aliens here are content with entertainment product, which seems to spawn from a Cornflakes box in many cases.

  • That the reason why policies, structures, and a guided mission objective is not required here… Is because it really doesn't matter. All you need to do here is think you're a pro entertainment operator, and it shall be so. Perhaps on a hobbyist sim ---not going to happen on a true entertainment production sim, however.

  • And now for the mother of all misconceptions… It's also believed that despite the staggering shortage of SL entertainment related offerings… That entertainment is free here because…. Um.. No one will pay for it? That's the explanation? LOL. Sometimes I think it's more entertaining listening to SL entertainment operators provide me their rational on how the entertainment model works in SL, while shelling out obscene amounts of their own RL earnings into a venue, which keeps everyone entertained… DJ's rich.. Romance alive...  And all for free. Great business model!   This is one for Fortune magazine :)

Reality check…

  • First of all, the annual U.S. leisure market is assessed at $2.4 trillion. Fueled predominantly by Baby Boomer spending and… Significant growth in the leisure marketplace is expected in the foreseeable future. Moreover, the SL demographic is not an alien following from another planet as many believe… It is encompassed into the same RL demographic, which supports online gaming, video movie rentals, movie theaters, bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and online dating.

  • The SL grid is now experiencing 150 million USD in User-to-User transactions each month. Yes, that is the combined amount of money you AV's are spending on goods and services in SL monthly. The grid in 'total' User-to-User transactions as of the 3rd quarter earnings report of 2009, topped out at 1 billion dollars USD, and up 54% from last year!. So pardon me? No one will spend money on entertainment, but they'll spend 1 billion on hair, jewelry, clothing, shoes, real estate, sex balls, and penis's?

Snicker… I wish the people that render these bizarre assertions would spend more time educating themselves and less time trying to sooth their own egos, the result of which...   Their inability to make a dime in what is indeed a potentially lucrative marketplace. If they did… Their venues may be turning revenue right now, and not through vendor nonsense, but real cash flow…

How can OTHER SL businesses, which are 100 times more abundant (in terms of competition) continue to turn sizable revenues, while… A sparse and "highly sought after commodity", such as social entertainment make ZERO?   You want the answer?   Because of a lack of basic business, and or entertainment operations knowledge… Not because SL refuses to spend money on entertainment. LOL   You first need to develop entertainment product *worth* spending money on :)

Yeah, that's a reality that may seem insulting to some… But the numbers, as they relate to the *total* volume of revenue being spent on the grid for MUCH LESS than what a number of these entertainment based sims are offering does not lie. If the disposable income exists and you're missing out… That's unfortunate, but the fault is your own… Not the SL grid and NOT the SL demographic.

The Internet started out in a similar fashion. The average mom and pop figured it would not go any further than a means to distributed jokes and porn. Good thing a small handful of visionaries and entrepreneurs believed differently, or the Internet today would be little more than jokes and porn.

SL entertainment entrepreneurs need to start educating themselves more… Spend more time reading, and less time influenced through half-baked assumptions. As demand for quality entertainment offering continues to sear, resources in the form of "cash flow" will be required to address demand with the infrastructure and resources able to satisfy it. Yes… Sims, builds, and operational structures cost money. You, as a soul entity can't keep picking up this tab forever.
